Baseball Settles For Tie With Holy Cross In Game Called After 12 Innings Due To Darkness
March 7, 2004 BRADENTON, Fla. - The University of Rhode Island baseball team tied Holy Cross 2-2 Sunday in a game called after 12 innings due to darkness. The Rams (2-7-1) scored two runs in the second inning, but Holy Cross tied the game with two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Rhode Island's pitchers did a great job in preserving the tie. Holy Cross had the winning run on second base in the ninth, a runner on first in the 10th, the bases loaded in the 11th and runners on first and second in the 12th, but each time the Rams were able to get out of jam unscathed. Holmes pitched seven innings, striking out five and allowing two runs in the seventh. Freshman Scott Brown went 4-for-5 and stole four bases in five attempts. Junior Mike Lefort pitched the eighth and ninth, red-shirt sophomore Gil Pina pitched the 10th and 11th and sophomore Tom Venedam came on to pitch the 12th. Rhode Island scored its runs in the bottom of the second, when Brown led-off with a single and stole second and third. Sophomore Josh Nestor walked, and then red-shirt sophomore Daryl Holcomb had a bunt single that scored Brown. On a double steal, Nestor scored to put the Rams up 2-0.
