Baseball Takes Down Fairfield, 12-6
March 2, 2009
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Freshman Milan Adams (Exeter, R.I.) went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI as the Rhode Island baseball team took down Fairfield, 12-6, Monday afternoon at Chain Lakes Field. Junior Rob Deveney (Marlton, N.J.) also recorded three hits in the win while sophomore Jeff Cammans (Jamestown, R.I.) drove in five runs for the Rams. Sophomore Chris Pickering (Lincoln, R.I.) earned the win on the mound for URI, allowing three runs and scattering eight hits over five innings. Classmate Ken Graveline (Prospect, Conn.) gave up just two hits with no earned runs in three innings of relief work. The Rams (4-2) jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first inning when Fairfield's Doug Ciallella loaded the bases and then hit DeVeney with a pitch to walk in junior Oliver Palmer (North Kingstown, R.I.). Cammans then belted a three-run triple down the right field line to plate DeVeney, as well as sophomore Tom Coulombe (Lincoln, R.I.) and senior Dan Rhault (Lincoln, R.I.). Junior Zoey Angulo (Miami, Fla.) followed with a sac-fly that scored Cammans before freshman Mike LeBel (Quincy, Mass.) reached on a bunt single, stole second and then crossed the plate on a two-run shot by Adams. Freshman Kenny Burns (Shelton, Conn.) then singled to center and scored Rhody's eighth run of the inning on an error by Fairfield's David Dudish. Rhody went up 9-0 the next inning on a sacrifice fly by Cammans that plated Coulombe. The Stags (0-2) made the score 9-2 in the top of the third but Adams crossed the plate on a sac-fly by Rhault in the bottom of the inning and DeVeney scored in the fourth to put the Rams back up by nine (11-2). Fairfield plated one in the fifth and another in the seventh before redshirt freshman Dan Haverstick's (Marlton, N.J.) solo shot in the bottom of the eighth made the score 12-4. The Stags came back and plated two more in the top of the ninth off of sophomore Cam Fox (Braintree, Mass.) but it was not enough as Rhody took the 12-6 win. The Rams return to action tomorrow night when they travel to No. 8 Miami for a 6 p.m. game against the Hurricanes.
