Box Score

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Sophomore Eric Smith (Milford, Conn.) struck out eight batters and allowed just three hits in eight innings as the Rhode Island baseball team picked up a 6-4 victory over Pittsburgh, Saturday afternoon at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Classmate Zoey Angulo (Miami, Fla.) led the Rams offensively, going 4-for-5 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored.

Freshman Jeff Cammans (Jamestown, R.I.) got things started for the Rams, drawing a one out walk in the top of the second, stealing second and crossing the plate on Angulo's single to right.

Sophomore Rob Deveney (Marlton, N.J.) built on Rhody's lead the following inning, crushing a leadoff double to left, advancing to third on an error by Pitt's Sean Conley, and reaching home on freshman Robert Noe's (Lynnfield, Mass.) RBI single to third.

The Rams got one more in the sixth - when sophomore Oliver Palmer (North Kingstown, R.I.) scored on an error by Danny Lopez - and another in the seventh - when Angulo scored on an error by Nick Mullins - for a 4-0 advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh. There, the Panthers used a two-out rally to get their only hits of the game and evened the score at 4-4.

In the top of the eighth, Cammans hit a two-out single to first and stole second, causing another Lopez error that put junior Dan Rhault (Lincoln, R.I.) on first safely. Angulo then singled to right to score both Cammans and Rhault and put Rhody back on top, 6-4.

Smith pitched three quick outs in the bottom of the eighth, before the game was called due to darkness, giving the Rams their second straight victory.

Rhody returns to action tomorrow afternoon with a noontime game against UMES.
