Baseball Swept By Dallas Baptist

DALLAS, Texas - The University of Rhode Island baseball team opened the 2004 season Friday with a pair of losses to Dalla Baptist by scores of 9-0 and 8-4.

The Patriots improved to 5-1, including taking three of four from a strong Texas Christian University team last week.

The Rams only trailed 2-0 throught five innings of the first game, with starting pitcher Dan Frederick allowing only one earned run through five innings. But the Patriots erupted for five runs in te sixth and added two more in the seventh.

In the second game, Dallas Baptist scored in every inning, including a three-run seventh inning as they won 8-4. Rhode Island's Zach Zuercher hit the first collegiate homer of his career on a two-run shot in the fourth inning and senior Dan Batz added a two-run homer of his own in the seventh inning.

Batz finished the second game 3-of-4 with two RBIs and finished the day 3-of-5.

The Rams (0-2) play another doubleheader with Dallas Baptist today beginning at 1 p.m.
