Coaching Experience: Steve Breitbach enters in his seventh season with the Rhode Island baseball program in 2009-10. Since joining the Rhody staff in January of 2004, has instructed hitters, outfielders, infielders and catchers. He also has served as the recruiting coordinator since 2005 and is currently the hitting coach for the Rams. In that time, the Rams have also captured four Atlantic 10 regular season titles and played in the 2005 NCAA Regionals after winning URI's first-ever A-10 Championship. Individuals under the tutelage of Coach Breitbach now hold 22 single-season and career hitting records at URI while, nine new single-season team records have been set. The top five records in nearly every statistical category are now owned by players or teams coached by Breitbach. In 2009, the Rams amassed a school-record 37 victories, including wins over No. 8 Miami, No. 11 Oklahoma State, No. 25 Ohio State, and NC State. Offensively URI had its best season to date setting team records for hits, runs, doubles, home runs and runs batted in, averaging nearly seven runs a game. Additionally, four Rams were selected in the 2009 MLB Draft including Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Dan Rhault who was undrafted out of high school. In Breitbach's time at URI, he has coached three All-Americans, six All-Region selections, 17 All-New England picks, two Atlantic 10 Players of the Year, 21 All-Conference honorees and 13 players who have either been drafted or inked professional contracts. In college, Breitbach spent two years playing at Berry College and two years at Oglethorpe University. While at Oglethorpe, he was a two-time team captain and was selected to the 2000 SCAC All-Tournament team. After completing his career at Oglethorpe, Breitbach became an assistant coach at his alma mater, serving as the infield, hitting, and conditioning coach for three years. In Breitbach's first year of coaching, he helped guide the Stormy Petrels to the 2002 SCAC Eastern Division title.
