KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island right handed pitchers Tyler Barss and Matt Murphy both have signed with the Traverse City Beach Bums of the Frontier League. Now in its 26th season, the midwest-based Frontier League is the nation's oldest currently running independent baseball league and currently features 12 teams competing in two divisions.
One of the best relief pitchers in Rhode Island history, Barss owns the program record for career saves (29), as well as the top-two single-season saves totals (13 in 2016; 11 in 2017). He finished his collegiate career ranked second at URI in pitching appearances, with 81.
An Atlantic 10 All-Conference and NEIBA All-New England selection, Barss recorded 109 strikeouts over 119.0 innings pitched during his time in Kingston. The New Boston, N.H. product also collected two wins this past season - against Dayton and St. Bonaventure.
Murphy, who transferred to URI after spending his first two seasons at Assumption College, collected three Atlantic 10 Player of the Week Awards in 2017. A native of Wakefield, R.I., he also tied Rhody's single-season record for pitching starts, making 15 in his first year with the Rams
The fifth-year senior finished his career with nine wins and 107 strikeouts in his two years with the Rams. This past season, he turned in a 2.78 ERA with 56 strikeouts and just 11 walks over 74.1 innings of work.
Barss and Murphy are the second and third players from Rhody's 2018 roster to continue on to a professional career as Nick Johnson was drafted by the Chicago White Sox (21st round/618 overall).
