Roy Receives Pirates Community Commitment Award

PITTSBURGH - The accolades continue to roll in for former Rhode Island center fielder Jeff Roy, who was was one of just nine players within the Pittsburgh Pirates' organization presented with a Pirates Community Commitment Program (PCCP) award, Tuesday night at PNC Park.

The PCCP program encourages players throughout the Pirates' system to emulate Roberto Clemente's legacy of community service. Roy, who was a National League All-Star in his rookie season with the Jamestown Jammers, was selected as his club's recipient of the annual PCCP Award.

"It's a really great honor to be recognized with a commitment to community award," said Roy, who was always the first player to invite young fans onto Bill Beck Field and challenge them to a race around the bases following URI's home games. "I remember being a little kid and really looking up to ball players and wanting to be just like them. It's cool to be on the other end of that now. I love being able to interact with our fans and serve as a role model for younger kids. It's definitely something that's important to me."

Since the PCCP program was implemented in 2008, more than 18,000 hours of community service have been performed by players throughout Pirates' organization.

Joining Roy in the pregame ceremony at PNC Park three-time MLB All-Star Andrew McCutchen, the big league club's winner of the 2013 Roberto Clemente Award, which is presented to the player who combines outstanding skills on the baseball field with devoted work in the community.
