DAYTON, Ohio - The Rhode Island baseball team was unable to hold on to its 4-1 lead, allowing Dayton to come back and post a 5-4 win on Saturday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Stadium. The loss marks URI's first Atlantic 10 series defeat since dropping two of three at Charlotte in the opening week of conference play.
Rhode Island's 1-6 hitters accounted for the majority of the offense as the bottom third of the lineup combined to go just 1-for-11 with one run scored. As a team, Rhody posted six hits on the afternoon while Dayton finished with eight.
The Flyers (30-25, 15-9) got on the board first with an unearned run in the bottom of the third but Rhody came back and took a 4-1 lead in the top of the sixth.
Redshirt sophomore Pat Fortunato scored URI's first run, crossing the plate on a wild pitch before redshirt junior Jeff Cammans scored on a fielding error by Dayton right fielder Mike Coughiln. Classmate Greg Annarummo then ripped a two-run single through the left side to push across senior Kenny Burns and junior Mike LeBel.
However, the Flyers rallied back with three more runs in the bottom of the seventh before drawing a bases-loaded walk to send in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.
Redshirt senior reliever Kyle Regnault was charged with the loss while UD's Tim Bury picked up the complete-game win.
The Rams (30-20, 16-8) return to action at next week's Atlantic 10 Championship at Campbell's Field in Camden, N.J. Rhody enters the tournament as the #2 seed and will face the winner of Wednesday's #3/#6 matchup on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. Pairings will not be finalized until the conclusion of tonight's Xavier/Fordham game - which is set to begin at 7 p.m. in the Bronx.
