KINGSTON, R.I. - Redshirt senior Stephen Peterson improved to 6-0 in Atlantic 10 play as the Rhode Island baseball team posted a 4-1 win over Massachusetts on Senior Day at Bill Beck Field. Peterson struck out 10 batters while allowing just six hits over nine complete innings for his third complete-game victory of the season. He has now given up just five runs over his last 35 innings pitched.
Juniors Mike LeBel, Dan Haverstick and Greg Annarummo each ripped a solo shot for Rhode Island, which improves to 29-17 overall and 15-6 in the Atlantic 10. With their second consecutive series sweep, the Rams are now tied with Charlotte for first place in the conference standings.
Annarummo and Haverstick put the Rams in front in the bottom of the second inning as each hit their second home run of the season off UMass starter Ben Hart.
The Minutemen (15-26, 6-11) got one back in the top of the sixth but Peterson worked his way out of a bases loaded jam before UMass was able to do any further damage.
LeBel then went yard in the bottom of the seventh, extending his hit streak to a season-best 11 games and giving Rhody a 3-1 lead. Senior Tom Coulombe would then drive in his team-leading 46th RBI of the season on a fielder's choice ball that scored freshman Jeff Roy in the bottom of the eighth.
Hart took the loss for UMass, giving up four runs on nine hits over 7.1 innings of work.
The Rams are next scheduled to take on nationally-ranked Connecticut on Monday, May 16 at Bill Beck Field.
