NCAA Baseball Rankings Update

KINGSTON, R.I. - The NCAA has released its updated rankings and - through games of April 24, 2011 - senior Ken Graveline is second in the nation in walks allowed per nine innings (0.29). The Prospect, Conn. native has issued just two free passes while striking out 49 batters over 62.2 innings pitched.

As a team, the Rams are fifth - out of 292 teams - with 89 stolen bases. Senior Tom Coulombe leads the club with 19, which ranks him 33rd in the country. A native of Lincoln, R.I., Coulombe also ranks third overall in sacrifice flys, with seven.

Additionally, Rhode Island is tops among all Atlantic 10 teams with an RPI of 50. The next best A-10 squad is Charlotte, which checks in at #100.

Furthermore, URI is second among the 44 East Region programs as only St. John's (39) is ranked higher.

What is the Ratings Power Index (RPI)?
The Ratings Power Index (RPI) is the official NCAA formula designed to aid the selection committee for each sport in choosing the tournament field. It is based on a combination of a team's winning percentage, their opponents' winning percentages, and their opponents' opponents' winning percentages, with bonuses and penalties involved for road wins against top teams or home losses to lower-ranked teams. The weighted values of these three categories are then added together to obtain a raw RPI score and teams are rank ordered based on this number.
