RICHMOND, Va. - Redshirt junior Jeff Cammans went 2-for-4 with a grand slam as the Rhode Island baseball team cruised past Richmond, 10-4, in the Atlantic 10 series finale Sunday afternoon at Pitt Field. Redshirt senior Stephen Peterson picked up the win on the hill, tossing eight complete innings to earn his fourth consecutive conference victory.
The Spiders (20-18-2, 7-5) came back and leveled things at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth on their first hit of the game - a solo shot to left field by Chris Cowell. However, Rhody put up a four spot in the top of the fifth to push the lead to 5-1.
Redshirt junior Dan Haverstick and redshirt sophomore Pat Fortunato started things off with back-to-back walks before Roy loaded the bases with his team leading 11th bunt single of the season. Cammans then sent URI's first grand slam of the season over the left field fence to put the Rams in front by four.
A two-run homer by Robby Massar got Richmond back within two (5-3) in the bottom of the sixth, but Cammans and redshirt junior Greg Annarummo scored on a Richmond error before Coulombe later stole home to make it an 8-3 lead in the top of the seventh.
A two-out single by JB Gadd then scored Matt Zink in the bottom of the frame but Haverstick's two-run single in the top of the ninth sealed the 10-4 win.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Providence to take on in-state rival Brown University.
