RICHMOND, Va. - Junior Milan Adams went 3-for-4 and drove in the winning run as the Rhody baseball team edged Richmond, 3-2, on Friday afternoon at Pitt Field. The win marked the Rams' first Atlantic 10 series opening victory this season.
Rhode Island (22-15, 8-5) got on the board first as Adams led off the top of the third with his first home run of the season - a solo shot to left field. Redshirt junior Jeff Cammans followed with a one-out single up the middle before advancing to second on a walk by senior Kenny Burns. Junior Mike LeBel then singled to left to drive in Cammans and put Rhody on top, 2-0.
The lead was short lived though, as the Spiders (19-17-2, 6-4) came back and scored two on a two-out error by the Rams in the bottom of the fourth.
It wasn't until the top of the ninth that the Rams finally broke the deadlock when Adams singled through the right side to plate freshman Jeff Roy, who had drawn a lead-off walk.
Senior reliever Dan Johnson tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth to pick up his third win of the season while junior starter Anthony Pisani got a no decision after going 5.2 innings with no earned runs.
Richmond's Bret Williams was charged with the loss, despite allowing just four hits over 8.1 innings of work.
The Rams and Spiders return to Pitt field for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday.
