KINGSTON, R.I. - Redshirt junior Dan Haverstick's bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 10th led the Rhody baseball team to a 4-3 victory over Sacred Heart on Tuesday afternoon at Bill Beck Field.
With the game tied at 3-3 and senior Tom Coulombe on second base, senior Kenny Burns and redshirt sophomore Pat Fortunato drew back-to-back two-out walks to load the bases for Haverstick, who grounded through the right side to drive in Coulombe and give the Rams the win. Rhode Island is now 2-1 in extra-innings games this season.
Redshirt sophomore starter Bobby Dean got the no-decision as he allowed just one hit while striking out four batters over six scoreless innings.
Neither team got on the board until the seventh inning when Sacred Heart broke the deadlock with an RBI sac-fly by Dave Boisture.
URI (21-14) took over the lead with a three-spot in the bottom of the frame as redshirt junior Greg Annarummo scored on a Fortunato ground out before redshirt junior Jeff Cammans drove in sophomore Kevin Stenhouse and junior Milan Adams with a two-out single to left center.
The Pioneers (17-18) evened it up at three apiece in their next trip to the plate, scoring twice on a pair of 6-3 ground outs, before Rhody finally ended things in the bottom of the 10th.
Boisture - who started the game in centerfield - was charged with the loss as he took the mound for Sacred Heart in the bottom of the eighth and gave up four walks and one hit over 2.2 innings of work.
Senior Dan Johnson earned the win for Rhody, ending the Pioneers' 10th inning with a fly-out and a pickoff.
The Rams are back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they host Stony Brook at 3:30 p.m.
