PALM BEACH, Fla. - Rhode Island senior Kenny Burns sent a two-out single to center field in the bottom of the sixth, plating two runs and leading the Rams to a 3-2 victory over Northeastern on Friday afternoon. The win improves Rhody's record to 7-2 while Northeastern falls to 0-8.
Redshirt junior Jeff Cammans paced the Rams' offense with a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Classmate Chris Pickering picked up his second win of the season on the mound for URI, striking out seven batters over 6.0 innings before handing the ball over to sophomore reliever Mike Bradstreet. Bradstreet went on to toss two scoreless innings while setting senior Gardner Leaver up for his 11th career save. Leaver - who took on the role of closer a year ago - is now tied (with Tim Boyce '10) for third all-time on the URI career saves list.
Rhody stranded two runners in the fifth before Burns' game-winning hit plated juniors Ty Muller and Evan Laude in the bottom of the sixth. From there, NU managed just three base runners the rest of the way while the Rams held on for the win.
Rhode Island is back in action on Saturday when it plays its final game at the Palm Beach Challenge vs. Western Michigan at 10 a.m.
