LAKE CHARLES, La. - Redshirt junior Jeff Cammans went 2-for-4 with two runs as the Rhode Island baseball team fell, 11-5, at McNeese State on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Pat Quinn also had two hits for the Rams, who suffer their first loss of the season.
Rhody (2-1) jumped out to an early lead after Cammans scored on a sac-fly by senior Tom Coulombe in the bottom of the first but the Cowboys plated a pair in the bottom of the frame to go up 2-1.
McNeese Sate extended its lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth before Rhody closed the gap with a two-run double by senior Kyle Borden that made it a 4-3 game in the top of the fifth.
MSU, however, countered with two in the bottom of the fifth, two more in the sixth and a three-spot on the eighth to take an 11-3 lead into the top of the ninth.
There, Pat Fortunato - who singled to lead off the inning - scored on a triple by freshman Jeff Roy before Cammans' sac-fly sent in Roy across the plate to make it 11-5. That was as close as Rhody would get though, as McNeese State avoided the series sweep with an 11-5 victory.
Redshirt senior Stephen Peterson was charged with the loss, giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks over 3.2 innings. MSU's Zach Butler picked up the win with a three-run, seven-inning outing for the Cowboys.
Rhode Island returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 26 when it faces Sacred Heart in Palm Beach, Fla.
