LAKE CHARLES, La. - Senior Tom Coulombe went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI as the Rhode Island baseball team posted a 9-2 win at McNeese State on Saturday night. The victory gives Rhody its first 2-0 start to a season since 2002.
Senior Ken Graveline picked up the win on the hill, allowing just two runs over six innings of work. Redshirt sophomore Bobby Dean - who came on in the bottom of the seventh - fanned four of the eight batters he faced before redshirt senior Kyle Regnault tossed a scoreless ninth.
The Cowboys (0-2) got on the board first, scoring one run in the first and another in the second to lead 2-0 heading into the third inning. There, Rhody plated four runs on five hits to take over the lead.
Freshman Jeff Roy started things off with a one-out single and advanced to second on a base hit by LeBel. A single by Cammans then pushed Roy across the plate and moved LeBel to third. Cammans went on to steal second - allowing LeBel to score and even things at 2-2 - before crossing the plate on a single by Coulombe. Annarummo would then single to drive in Coulombe and put Rhody on top, 4-2.
Two innings later, LeBel led off with a triple before a home run by senior Kyle Borden - URI's first of the season - gave the Rams a 6-2 lead.
Rhode Island (2-0) used a two-out rally to tack on three more runs in the bottom of the seventh as Annarummo tripled to plate Coulombe and freshman Joe Landi before coming around to score Rhody's final run on an RBI single by junior Ty Muller.
Dustin Lloyd took the loss for McNeese State, giving up six runs on eight hits over five innings. Lee Orr, meanwhile, paced the Cowboys' offense with a 3-for-5 day at the plate.
Rhode Island closes out the three-game set with MSU tomorrow at Noon (ET).
