WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Junior Tom Coulombe recorded five hits, four RBI, three runs and three stolen bases as the Rhody baseball team trounced Fairfield, 20-3, Wednesday afternoon in Winter Haven, Fla. Coulombe is now 12-for-15 (.800) with eight RBI, six runs, and three doubles in Rhody's last three games.
As a team, the Rams plated 20 runs on 21 hits while stranding 13 base runners. Fairfield, meanwhile, recorded three runs on 10 hits while leaving nine on base. The win improves URI to 3-8 while the Stags drop to 5-3.
Coulombe got things started in the top of the first, using a one-out double to drive in sophomore Mike LeBel and junior Kyle Borden. However, a two-run double by Fairfield's Anthony Hajjar quickly evened things up at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning.
Rhode Island then exploded for 10 runs on seven hits in the top of the second as seniors Zoey Angulo and Rob DeVeney both walked and doubled while scoring two times each.
Rhody kept things rolling in the top of the third as Coulombe scored on a bases-loaded catcher's interference call before a base on balls to DeVeney sent redshirt sophomore Adam Derner across the plate to make the score 14-2. LeBel went on to score on a passed ball in the top of the fifth to give URI a 15-2 advantage.
The Rams tacked on four more in the top of the seventh, thanks to a two-run triple by senior Oliver Palmer and a two-run double by Coulombe - both of which were hit with two away.
Coulombe would go on to score the Rams final run of the game in the top of the ninth, sending a two-out single to right before coming around to score on a double by freshman Kevin Stenhouse.
Fairfield managed to add one more in its last trip to the plate, but that's as close as the Stags would get.
Senior Dan Rossignol earned the win for Rhody, allowing two runs while striking out six batters in seven innings of work. Fairfield's Scott Warwick, meanwhile, was charged with the loss.
Rhode Island returns to action on Thursday afternoon when it faces Miami (Ohio) at 1 p.m.
