Cunningham Looks To Tie Teammate Sullivan's School-Record Hitting Streak When Rams Host Iona
April 12, 2005
KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Rhode Island baseball team goes for its fourth-straight victory when the Rams host Iona on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Bill Beck Field.
Sophomore Ryan Cunningham (Centreville, Va.) will look to tie senior teammate Matt Sullivan (Nashua, N.H.) for the school-record hitting streak of 17 games. Sullivan's streak was snapped last Monday at Dayton and Cunningham has a 16-game hitting streak entering today's game.
Cunningham tied a school record for hits with a perfect 5-for-5 performance in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader with Richmond.
Iona enters the game with a 4-21 record and a 2-6 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Dan Rodriguez leads the Gaels with a .302 batting average.
The defending Atlantic 10 regular-season champion Rams are 11-14 overall and 7-2 in the conference after becoming the first A10 team to sweep perennial power Richmond over the weekend.
Rhody outscored the Spiders, who had entered the series in first place in the Atlantic 10 West Division, by a 33-6 margin and out-hit Richmond 40-14.
Junior lefty Zack Zuercher (Warwick, R.I.) is the Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week after tossing a complete-game three-hitter with 12 strikeouts and allowing only one run in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader sweep.
