How It Happened
Rhode Island (15-19) swept its second doubleheader in three days, beating Maine 8-1 and 8-0 Monday afternoon. The Rams have won four straight games and are 9-2 over their last 11 contests.
Game 1 - Rhode Island 8, Maine 1
Skyler Rapuano had a three-run double and
Emily Power added a two-run single as part of a five-run first inning for Rhode Island. From there, pitcher
Liz Lynchard took care of things as the Rams cruised in the opener.
Lynchard (6-6) hurled 5.0 strong innings, striking out 10 batters along the way. She allowed just two hits - both singles - and did not walk a batter. Rhody tacked on three runs in the bottom of the fifth to salt the win away.
Game 2 - Rhode Island 8, Maine 0 (6 inn.)
A steady attack resulted in Rhody scoring two runs in the first inning, two in the fourth and four more in the sixth for the team's mercy-rule victory of the season.
Katie Zaun (7-8) and
Ashley Hibbard combined on a one-hit shutout as Rhody dominated in all facets.
Kylie Bulinski drove in three runs and
Jessica Hennelly ended the game in walk-off fashion when she lined a two-run double to the gap in right center, driving in Bulinski and
Casey Miller to seal URI's second win of the day.
