HORACE G. "PAPPY" OWENS '88 was one of Rhode Island's all-time greats in basketball, playing from 1980-83. At the time of his induction he was sixth on the all-time scoring list with 1,765 points, and held the marks for most games started (110) and consecutive starts (108). Owens was an AP Honorable Mention All-America as a senior and a first-team All-Atlantic 10 selection, as well as Words Unlimited Athlete of the Year. As a junior, he was second-team Eastern 8, first-team District I and Honorable Mention All-New England. He finished twenty-third in the nation in scoring (22.8 ppg) and second in the Atlantic 10 as a senior. He was chosen first in the second round by the NBA's New Jersey Nets before being traded to the Philadelphia 76ers.
